2014 -
80 years of K Fellfarers

80th Birthday - 2014 marks the 80th Anniversary of the club and we’re looking for suggestions to celebrate the occasion. Events currently planned include -

  • A party at High House on Saturday May 31.
  • An '80 Tops’ challenge. The challenge is for club members to bag 80 different tops based on the Wainwright list, but they must be completed in the 7 days between May 3 and 10. A photo must be taken on each top as evidence. Book your tops from this list with Hugh Taylor, and then let him know on completion. The photos will be shown at the above party on May 25th.
  • An '80 Islands' challenge. Club members to try and land on 80 different islands in the year starting on January 1st leading up to the closing party in November. Let Hugh Taylor know when you have visited an island, and he'll add it to the list. The criteria for what counts are currently -
    • UK or abroad.
    • Must have a name
    • Must be surrounded by water, but may be connected to the mainland by causeways, barrages or bridges
    • The island must have been landed on. Hence it must be large enough to be able to land on it: simply touching it doesn't count
    • If one name covers more than one island in a group, each island will count as one
    • Again, a photo must be taken as evidence
  • The Fellfarers Way - a competition to design a walk with Fellfaring connections and then walk the winning way later in the year.
  • A closing party with slide show in November.
  • Any other suggestions gratefully received!
  • As well as the challenges for all club members to take part in, some members are undertaking their own personnal challenges, and these include -
    • Fred Underhill - fishing in 80 tarns
    • Gary Sandys and Kati Clegg - visit 80 old churches
    • Helen Speed - identify 80 fungi
    • Paul and Rose East - spot 80 species of bird in one day (May 23rd).Now completed - see list here
    • Mick Fox - 80 new tops
    • Jan Lancaster and Ruth Joyce - 80 foot bridges
    • Sue Blamire - 80 poteaux (randonnee signposts) over her and Phil's three weeks in Vaucluse and Ardeche.
    • Lis Blamire Dubreuil - Walking 80 kilometres in the Ardeche

80 Routes on Kendal Climbing Wall - One of our members has suggested one final KFF challenge: 80 different routes in a day at Kendal Climbing Wall. It should be possible if we can get a good number to join in. It should be a fun evening and we can round it off, whether we reach our target or not, with a celebration pint afterwards. As with all our climbing evenings, everyone is welcome. The more members we have, the better the chance of success.
If you can’t manage the evening or want to make an early start you could turn up in the afternoon.
You can just turn up but it would be helpful if you could let Clare know in advance.
There are a couple of harnesses available if required.

80th anniversary party in Staveley Beer Hall. Please keep this date free! Guests are welcome.
The party starts at 7pm and finishes at midnight. Buffet by Wilfs and beer brewed on the premises!
There will be an exhibition and continuous slideshow of our activities in the Club’s 80th year and throughout its history. The 555 bus provides an excellent service to and from Staveley until very late in the evening.
If you are in touch with any past members of the Club please do pass on the invitation to them. They’ll be very welcome. We would like to have an idea of numbers for catering. Please let Clare or any member of the
Social Sub-committee know if you hope to attend.
